Can't die like this
“I can't live like this anymore.”
“I can't live with myself anymore.”
“I'm ashamed of what I've become, both a hypocrite and fake, someone who can't even show who I really am.”
“Every time I choose to stay silent, a part of me dies slowly until there is nothing left.”
The monster grabs my leg and my hands almost give out from the vine. The monster's strength is both vicious and terrifying. As I look down at it's face, a wave of horror hits me square in the gut. Tears fill my eyes and I swallow my scream. I whimper pathetically, crying for help. Just as I can't hold on any longer, two hands reach out and grab my arms. I look up and my heart leaps into my throat because it was my guardian.
“Douglas!” I cry with joy.
The monster notices a change in his odds, and starts pulling me down faster more harder. Alarmed I look into Douglas' eyes, but he just grimaces and puts his arms under my armpits and pulls me up.
I breathe a sign of relief when the monster finally releases my leg as propel myself forward with a kick backwards. The monster that held my leg flinches backward, but not before he slices my boot. I grimace as my foots stings and I gasp as I finally reach the top of the cliff, but I give myself not one extra moment to be relieved.
“We must go! Run!” I yell frustrated.
We run for ten minutes because the monster is going to find some of his friends, and that's not going to be pretty. I collapse as we run up a rocky hill. Douglas stops and turns around.
“Go! You must go! It is too dangerous, leave me behind. I will catch up soon, ” I yell at him furiously.
Instead he stubbornly looks back at me, “I will not, I will not leave you behind. Why have you collapsed?”
I look away and he abruptly grabs my leg. I flinch as my wound stings. He notices my pain, and gingerly pulls off my boots. A bloody wound, slightly black and red right across my foot stares back.
Doug stares back at me.
“Why didn't you tell me sooner, why did you put yourself through that pain,?” He asks with empathy on his face.
He turns away and pours water from a bottle onto my leg. The cool sensation washes a bit of the pain away, but the throbbing of my leg and heart remains. He rips his shirt into strips and wraps it around my foot. When he is finished, he gets up and slowly helps me up. He crouches down and gestures to his back.
“Get on my back,” he says looking into my eyes.
I gawk, “No! I'm too heavy and I'll bring us both down!”
“If you don't hurry, that monsters going to finally catch up to us and finish us off,” he replies.
I suddenly realize we're sitting ducks the longer we argue, so I just swallow my pride and get on his back. I'm all tense as he starts to walk, and as the setting sun shines through the leaves I notice how peaceful but dangerous the forest is. I look straight ahead and look down, Douglas' hair is glowing like the sun itself. I see the long path ahead, but I know even if it kills him, he will get me to the end of our journey. I lean down clasping harder around his neck, he turns slightly to see if I am still conscious. I whisper quietly into his ear, “Thank you, Doug.” I can tell that Douglas is blushing slightly from the reddish tinge of blood in his ears. I smile quietly and drift into sleep like a cloud to heaven.
As a child, my maman told me of the eternal bond.
My child, you will learn one day about the eternal bond, that will protect you from everything. It is even stronger than the bond of love because it is the one bond that will protect you forever and think of you first no matter what. The eternal bond will only link you to that person alone for the rest of your life until death takes away your last breath. Eternal bonds are very uncommon because both fate, destiny, flow of time and Creator of the heavens must work this miraculous bond. My child, your father was my other, the other side of my eternal bond, but since he is gone, not a single day passes without thought of him. I see it in the future, you will meet a man who will love you like you are his whole world, and he will protect you because of this eternal bond. You will fulfill your duty and reach the end of your journey, but not without much pain and loss. When you find your other, this eternal bond must be honoured through a ceremony. The ceremony where eternal bonds made, will be fulfilled and made true and hold fast. My child, know that your father and I will love you to the end of time. Know that somewhere out there, someone loves you as much as we love you.
